I am saddened and shocked to learn about the death of one of my favorite singers. I found Amy on YouTube years ago. Before she blew up, lost control and became buried by negative tabloids. Her voice. It was like nothing I’d ever heard. I was like “YO!! Do you know Amy Winehouse??!!” to all my singer friends at New School. They were like “No, who’s that.” Now everyone and their grandparents know her– not for her talent, but for her addictive behavior. 98% of all the videos and pictures you find of Amy depict her lower self, defeated by her weaknesses and inner-demons… I was so disappointed when I starting seeing her crumble apart. What a waste of talent, of potential, of life… I felt as though she was not only destroying herself, but truly not treasuring her fans, the people. We wanted to love her, support her, hear her and be inspired by her. Instead, we are left with a great loss. Undeniably gifted, Amy you will truly be missed. This is how I choose to remember Amy. The same way I discovered her.
Life is so precious. We must take good care of it while we have it, and make the best of it. We have infinite potential to fulfill every desire in our hearts & infinite power to overcome any problem that we face. All we need to do is BELIEVE. That’s when you are your highest self, when you are the real you.

* Saw my family in upstate NY for my little sister’s graduation from SKIDMORE College in Saratoga Springs! So proud of her!!! I love them!!
妹の卒業式を見に行きました。家族に会えて嬉しかった〜！
* Went to the Bronx Zoo and made eye-contact with this big tiger!
有名なブロンクス動物園に初めて行って来ました。
* Checked out my homies show @ Joe’s Pub in NYC. So proud of all my classmates from The New School doing big things in NYC and all over the world. From the left, this is Chris Turner (Vo), Omar Abdulkarim (Tp), Kenneth Whalum III (Ts). They sounded killin’ as always :)
素晴らしい音楽を聴きに行きました。このショーはNew Schoolで仲良かった友達のでした。みんな凄いことをNYだけではなく、世界中でやっています。
いろんな有名人と共演してますが、そろそろ皆もそれぞれ有名になりそうな予感〜！！！
* Hung out @ the studio with my brother from another mother TAKU (aka Takuya Kuroda) and our homies from his sextet during the recording of his 2nd album (FYI- We will all be touring Japan together this summer with shows in Osaka, Nagoya, Shizuoka & Tokyo so make sure to catch us in August!!). 東日本大震災から2ヶ月立ちます。
やっとこの事について、ためていた想いを文章にできる心の余裕がついたので、大変遅くなりましたが、
亡くなられたみなさま、被災されたみなさま、心よりお見舞い申し上げます。
数え切れないほどの命が失われてしまいました。
大好きなご家族、ご親戚、お友達、お家、勤め先や会社がなくなってしまった多くの人々。。。
言葉が出ません。何を言って正しいのかも分かりません。
でも毎回ニュースで被災者の姿を観るたんびにその痛みを深く感じ、涙が溢れる。
私に何が出来るんだろう？
と考えた上。
赤十字に自分が払えるだけ寄付しましたが、
私には音楽しかない、
音楽を通して人に元気や勇気を与えようとする想いで歌うしかない。
と気付き、
どれだけ余震と放射能が怖くても、
皆怖がっているし、私よりももっとひどいめにあっている、もっと恐ろしい経験をしているの人は沢山いるはず、
私なんかまだ全然ラッキーなほう。
だからアメリカに逃げず、大好きな日本を見捨てないで、大好きなみんなを裏切らないで、みんなとひとつになって、
歌で人の心を少しでも温かく、豊かに、安心にさせたいと想い、
自分とさんざん戦いつつ、
お蔭様でここまで来れました。
この先がどうなるかが怖くて、不安でしょうがなくて本当にどうしようかと思っていたところ、
今年初めて見た満開の桜。。。。

あの朝、井の頭公園で今まで生きてきた中で一番美しいものを目撃した。
桜に癒され、勇気付けられ、胸いっぱいの感動を与えられました。
日本って本当に美しい国だ。日本、大好きー！！
この命があるからこの景色が見れたんだ。
生きてて良かった〜！！
日本に居て良かった〜！！！！って強く思いました。
何も怖くない。明日が見えなくても、今日、自分が出せる限りの力を発揮し、
自分の命を守り、周りの人の命も大事に大事にすれば、
絶対宇宙は守ってくれるはず。
ポジティブを信じるしかない！「絶対大丈夫」って信じれば、絶対に大丈夫！！！！！

2 months have passed since the huge earthquake and tsunami hit northern Japan taking away the lives, homes and jobs of thousands. It took me this long to write anything about it because I was lost for words. I was soooooooooo so saddened by all the loss, misery and pain so many people had to (and are still having to) endure. And I was TERRIFIED of what else might happen. But I finally feel collected and safe enough to sit down and gather/release my thoughts… so here they are.
I want to first give my utmost condolences to all those who lost their loved ones, their homes, businesses, jobs and belongings due to the earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011. I have no idea how tough this time has been for you, but I have cried many tears watching your struggle and loss on the news and your pain is my pain… My heart is with you.
After asking myself what I could do to help the situation, I made a donation to the Red Cross but realized that all I can do is sing for the happiness of all people. That is what I was put here on Earth to do. The way I can be most useful now is to use my voice to uplift the people of Japan and give hope and courage to those in need. Although I wanted to escape Japan, fearing all of the aftershocks and radiation, I didn’t want to leave my people behind, so I decided to stick it through and conquer my fears. I kept telling myself there are people out there who faced much more disaster and hardship than me– I am so fortunate to still be alive and I HAVE TO BELIEVE that everything is going to be ok. It was a constant battle between my higher self and weaker self– my faith and my fear.
It was the sight above– of the first cherry blossoms I saw this year, that blew my mind and healed my heart. Possibly the most beautiful sight I’ve witnessed in all my life. I was instantly filled with gratitude to be in Japan to see this view and for the life I had which allowed me to see it.
I love you, Japan. I am so glad I stayed. I am so glad to be here and I know we’ll make it through this stronger than ever. There is no way we won’t be protected if we believe in the positive forces of the Universe, in each other, and in ourselves. Let’s treasure life– each others’ and our own.

地震の2日後、関内KAMOMEでキャンセルするべきか、行うべきかすごく迷って結局やろうと決めて行った吉田サトシさん(gt)のリーダーライブから私の大好きな坂本九さんの名曲、「上を向いて歩こう」のカバーを残します。大好きな友人のシンガー、深川由里江ちゃんが飛び入りして一緒に歌ってくれました。
あの夜、来て下さったみなさま、本当にありがとうございました。一生忘れません。
I leave you with a video from the first show I did after the earthquake. It was only 2 days after, and we were debating whether to do the show or cancel it, but we decided to do it and were revived by the power of music and the power of life. Thank you to all who came and shared with us a night to remember.
To all those still suffering and living in fear, I pray that your heart is filled with faith, and that your days will be filled with security, happiness, and hope.

彼は私の関西ツアーにも参加して一緒に回ってくれて本当に楽しい、インスパイヤーされる、深い所まで連れてってくれる演奏をしてくれました。JZ Bratでも間違いなく、気合とハートいっぱいの素晴らしい演奏をしてくれました。
My homie from New School in NYC, trumpeter Takuya Kuroda was my special guest @ JZ Brat (and also for my Kansai tour). He is an unbelievably DEEP and dope musician. Words cannot express my admiration and respect for this dude. His teamwork, partnership, leadership, musicianship, soulfulness, dedication, humility… all go above and beyond anyone I’ve ever worked with.
今回はオリジナル曲をいっぱい歌いました。自分のオリジナルとギターの吉田サトシさんと一緒に書いた曲や最近一緒に沢山曲作りをしているベースの小泉P克人さんとピアノの熊谷ヤスマサさんを呼んで共作曲をフィーチャーリング！超楽しかった〜！！TOKUさんと宮本貴奈さんも来てくれて最後の曲に飛び入りしてくれ、盛り上がりました。
I sang a lot of original music which was super fun! In addition to my own originals, I sang some songs that I recently co-wrote with my favorite musician buddies– a song I wrote with my guitarist Satoshi Yoshida, and with pianist Yasumasa Kumagai and bassist Yoshihito “P” Koizumi, who I invited to sit in. Flugelhorn/vocalist TOKU and pianist Takana Miyamoto also came through and joined us for the last number. So. Much. Fun!! :)
みんな、一生忘れない夜をありがとうございました。

I am honored to be on the gig tonight led by Tokyo’s super funky, soulful, groovy bassist Yoshihito Koizumi, who goes by the name of “P” !! It’s his monthly leader session entitled “P-Project” and just for the occasion, we wrote 4 new songs together– can’t wait to release them fresh into the world tonight!! We’ll be performing lots of original music as well as some original arrangements of jazz, bossa-nova, and soul standards/covers. 先週、NYCに1週間ほど戻って荷物の整理をしてた時に発見した写真です。
こんなハッピーで自由に笑ってる3歳か4歳の自分の姿を見て心が暖まりました。
人を大事にしなければいけない。それは毎日のように意識しようとしてるけど
ついつい自分を攻めたりしちゃうんだよな〜。
自分を大事にすること、自分を愛する大切さを思い出させてくれたこの写真。
素敵な生命をくれた両親、宇宙に感謝です。
頑張ってこの生命を最も慈悲深く秘蔵しよっ。

I couldn’t help but let out a big ol’ chuckle when I found this last week during a quick visit back to NYC.
You all know how much I love kids so this pic just had me dyin’.
We are taught to be humble (often to the extremes of self-sabotage) so it is not “PC” for me to say this, but I’m going to state the obvious: this pic is HELLA cute!! When I saw it, I couldn’t help but fall in love with this little girl. I fell in love with the freedom and sincerity of my smile and was instantly reminded of the importance of loving oneself. I always try to be conscious of others and treat everyone with the utmost respect and love, but it’s easy to forget to cherish myself and I often forget how to be compassionate towards myself. But this little girl in this picture made me want to treasure this being. This little girl is me and she deserves to be loved at all times ^.^ Every life deserves to be cherished, by each other and ourselves…
